Was there a time
When smoking tobacco
Was promoted as cool and healthy,
When there were ashtrays in clinics
And the svengalis were making a killing,
The promotors and dealers are fine
The operations moved down the line
There’s free drugs in clinics
Big pharma and food labs are rocking
Governments force a strong hand in marketing
And the svengalis are still making a killing.

Beneath our feet
Grinding, crumbling, groaning,
Plates sliding, slipping, sticking,
Above, governments confused,

With good, bad, no intentions,
The sane among us sit in the sun
Sipping tea and coffee resigned
To the fact that sooner or later
Something has to give.
